Training for 11/2/16

Today, Pepper and I did another lap around the 5.5-mile loop. I’d thought about doing this week’s middle distance run, an 8-miler, but, as usual, I didn’t leave early enough to do it before I had to be somewhere for work. Maybe tomorrow.

It wasn’t such a pleasant run for me anyway. I had digestive troubles like I haven’t had in a while for some unknown reason. I had to stop in the woods a little after the 3-mile point, and I felt kinda gross the rest of the way home.

I had to stop and walk once about a mile from home, but that was because I started laughing. Pepper had a stick in his mouth when an unmarked white van rolled by — a stereotypical kidnapper van — and I was thinking how Pepper was my attack dog, and the stick was his shank.

That made me think of the time two of my friends, Wendy and Julie, were telling the story of the time Julie shanked Wendy at a water fountain in third grade. It was so embarrassing for Wendy because Julie shanked her in front of one of the boys in our class.

If you’re confused, like the woman listening to the story who’d not grown up around here was, don’t feel bad. For some reason, the kids around here referred to pulling down someone’s pants as “shanking” them. We eventually knew that was also the term for stabbing someone with a makeshift weapon, or shank, but we thought all kids everywhere had also used that term to refer to pulling down someone’s pants.

Apparently not! That woman’s eyes got really big, and she said, “WTF kind of elementary school did you people go to?!”

Anyway, I got that out of my system, and then we finished our run.
