Training for 1/6/15

I wound up taking a rest day yesterday. The temperature had dropped overnight from the mid 60s to the lower 30s, and it’d gotten really windy, so it didn’t look inviting. Plus, every time Pepper caught me looking out the window, he’d make this disapproving groany noise from the couch. It was like he knew, and he neither wanted to go out there with me nor stay home by himself.

Today, I had meetings to cover both first thing in the morning and in the evening, so my only chance to run all day was before the first meeting. I set the alarm for 6:15 a.m.

I woke up around 3 a.m. with a weird sinus headache thing going on. There’s no way it was related to the time I spent in the ocean a couple of days ago, right? I mean, I felt like I barely got any water up my nose. I took some ibuprofen and tried to get back to sleep.

I had a tough time sleeping, but of course, when the alarm did go off, the last thing I wanted to do was get up, let alone get dressed to run in below-freezing temperatures. In the dark. The sinus pressure was gone though.

I did it anyway. It was bitterly cold out, but at least the wind was calm for once. The snow they’d predicted hadn’t started yet either.

I ran a lap around the 4.5-mile loop. My legs never really warmed up. I think I need warmer tights for days like today. The thing is, we don’t get many of them around here, so I never think about buying any until it’s 19 degrees and I feel like my butt is going to fall off a mile into a run.

The highlight of the run — and I’m being serious — was around mile 4, when I crossed an intersection just behind a pickup with a diesel engine taking off from the stop sign, and I got a nice big whiff of diesel exhaust right in my face. It was awesome!

I think tomorrow and Thursday are supposed to be even colder, and windy again, but it should return to more normal temperatures after that.
