Training for 4/8/14

Hey, I finally ran again today!

I had my usual Tuesday morning meeting to get to, so I got up early and knocked out a run first thing. It was a warmish, very muggy and very windy morning.

I had enough time for the 5.5-mile loop. Things were going fine for the first four miles or so. I didn’t even mind when I had to run head-on into the wind, it felt so good to be out there in shorts and a tank top. And then, to absolutely no one’s surprise, I felt the ol’ gut pangs pop up.

I was on a part of the route surrounded by trees. I could have easily run into the woods and taken care of it right there. But for some reason, today I decided I’ve been letting my butt get its way as soon as it wants it for far too long, and this time was going to be different.

The next 1.5 miles were… hard haha. Pretty sure I spent the whole time scanning the sides of the road for the closest available hiding spot if it came to that. It’s also probably not a coincidence that was the fastest I ran the whole way.

It was getting bad. I wondered if passing motorists saw the anguish etched on my face and thought I must have been running on two broken legs to look that miserable. Even as my house got closer and closer, I was never sure I was going to make it — I was wishing I’d waited until the field directly across the road from our house had full-grown corn to wage this mental battle with my digestive system.

There was no time for cool down walking today! I ran clear to our back step, so I wound up running 5.6 miles at an 8:21/mile pace and, most importantly, defeated my petulant toddler of a GI tract.

I WON THIS ONE, BUTT.
