A Simple Running Log

Training for 2/10/14

Saturday morning, I was getting ready for the week’s “long” run, when I found out there had been a death — my iPod had kicked it sometime since the flight home from California a few days prior. This was made even more irritating by the fact I’d only had it for a little more than a year.

I sucked it up though, and made do with my phone instead. I know, I’m such a trouper.

I set out for my 6.5-mile loop. It was cold and breezy, and while I can’t remember the last time it was so hard to run 6.5 freaking miles, I was happy nothing hurt in an injury kind of way. The Garmin said I finished it in, well, I can’t remember the total elapsed time now, but it was something under and hour and an 8:50/mile average pace.

That afternoon, Clark, Mike and I went to a Maryland basketball game, which turned out to actually be fun. Maybe I should have gone to some when I was a student there. In the evening, we met Clark’s family at Doc’s in Easton to celebrate Clark’s birthday.

Sunday, I really wasn’t at all sore from my run the day before, but I had planned on a rest day, so I took it. I didn’t do a damn thing. It was pretty nice.

I got an email from the woman organizing the pace team for the Ocean City half marathon at the end of April. I’ve been assigned to lead the 2:50 pace group, which is a 12:58/mile pace. Even when I was doing those one minute running/two minutes walking intervals a few weeks ago, I was still averaging 12:00 miles. I’m going to need some practice running that pace. I recognized the name of the woman who will be leading the 3:00 pace group. She runs the same paces as I do — sometimes faster — so she’s going to have her work cut out for her too.

I’m still excited about it though. I’ve never gotten to do something like this.

And I signed up to run as part of a team in a Run or Dye event in Salisbury in May. I did a similar event, the Color Run, in D.C. about a year and a half ago. It’s the same idea — an untimed 5K with a stop about every kilometer to get blasted by a different colored powder, and then a huge gathering after the finish to just throw more powder at each other. My sister-in-law has recruited her brother, my older sister and me to form a team, so this should be fun too.

Today, I did strength training downstairs again. Ab exercises, push-ups, invisible chair-sitting, lifting with the adjustable dumbbells and four sets of 100 on the jump rope.
